The film was released theatrically in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2005 by Metrodome Distribution. It also had a DVD release two years later, with extras including an interview with director Terry Gilliam, behind-the-scenes footage not seen in the theatrical cut, and a video of "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" starring John Neville. This last feature is available only on the Region 2 DVD. The film was also shown at the 2005 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received positive reviews. It made its U.S. television premiere on HBO in October 2006 as part of their "Cinema Now" series. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with a 77% "Fresh" rating at the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes based on a sample of 98 reviews. Its consensus reads, "Even with a few misfires, this is Terry Gilliam's best film in years." At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the film has received an average score of 68 based on 28 reviews. Roger Ebert gave the movie 3 stars out of 4 and called it "pure pleasure" and "one of those movies you go to for astonishment".
It had a worldwide gross of $13,749,926 despite being released at such a late date (its release date is listed as June 1, 2006). That made it the 3rd highest-grossing film of 2005, behind "Horton Hears a Who!", and "Bewitched", which had only been released that year. As of May 2009, the film has grossed $31,579,171 in the U.S., and $45,883,617 overall.
The film was released on DVD on March 26, 2006. The DVD contains an interview with Terry Gilliam and a documentary entitled "Making of The Brothers Grimm". There is also a commentary by Terry Gilliam and John Cleese, and eleven deleted scenes.
It received seven awards: Outstanding Direction (Terry Gilliam), Outstanding Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki), Outstanding Makeup (Barry Kramer and Jan Hooks) and Creature Design (Jared Martin) – all for the 2007 Academy Awards, as well as Best Original Screenplay by Kirsten Smith at the 2005 Empire Awards.
